    Biographical history

    Born in Toney River, Nova Scotia, A.H. McQuarrie moved with his family to a homestead in the Northwest Territories in 1893. He joined the Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge Branch in 1903 as a carpenter but left in 1904 when he began working as a bridge builder with the Northwest Territorial Government before the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were formed.

    In 1907 he travelled to Edmonton and was offered employment with the Department of Public Works for the Province of Alberta. He was involved in the construction of the Edson-Grande Prairie Trail and other roads and bridges. He became the engineer overseeing the Peace River district in 1916 and resident engineer in 1922. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1933.

    In retirement, he lived in Edmonton, New Hampshire and Peterborough, Ontario. Predeceased by his wife in 1960, he died in Edmonton in1966.

    Custodial history

    In 1961 A.H. McQuarrie gave his history of the Edson-Grande Prairie Trail to Norman Willmore, the Minister of Lands and Forests. Willmore gave a copy of this history to A. Russell Patrick, the Minister of Industry and Development. A. Russell Patrick gave a copy of this history to the Provincial Secretary, A. Holowach.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of manuscripts written by A.H. McQuarrie about different events in Alberta’s history and photographs of various areas throughout Alberta.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    The Provincial Secretary, A. Holowach deposited this record with the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1966. Another accession of records was then deposited in 1967 by Mrs. R.F. Hanna, A.H. McQuarrie’s daughter.
