The series consists of transportation records that relate to airports and aviation. The department was responsible for maintaining and protecting the network of publicly licensed community airports until 1984, when the responsibility was transferred to the Airport Commission. The department also owned and operated provincial airports until 1996 when the function was transferred to municipalities. The series addresses how the department performed these functions and other related aviation concerns. The records relate to land purchases and transfers, airport maintenance and lighting, inspections and incidents, standards, and branch operational records.

The fonds consists of copied images at the High River Air Station originally from about 1922, of a Hucks Starter, airplanes, airmen, and the Air Station.

The fonds consists of photographs of airplanes, aerial views of airports taken by the United States Army dating from the 1940s; postcards and photographs of individuals acquired by LeRoy Palmer, dating from the 1930s to the 1950s; visitor guides for Edmonton, Alberta dating from 1949 and 1958, Alberta College Calendars dating from the 1930s and 1940s; and a copy of the Edmonton Journal from the Royal Visit in 1939.

The series consists of policy records that relate to passenger transportation. The records address railway relocation, Shortline Railway information, Multi-Modal Council information, Highspeed Rail information, VIA rail information, airport issues, air service and airport policy, helicopters, transport policy, policy issues, Alberta bus industry, marketing, engineering policy, and free trade. The records include policy and planning documents, copies of legislation, regulations, bylaws, studies, reports, correspondence, action requests, agreements, meeting materials, briefing materials.

The fonds consists of postcards of aerial views of Edmonton including the Legislative buildings, the North Saskatchewan River, the Hotel Macdonald, the Municipal Airport, Jasper Avenue, the University of Alberta, various hospitals and buildings, sports fields, an oil refinery, and Leduc.

The fonds consists of photographs and negatives of an airplane salvage operation, the salvage of a Canada Post Office airplane that had crashed and was frozen in ice, along with a photograph of a river and cliff and one of the Edmonton Municipal Airport and its parking lot.

The fonds consists of a copy of comic history of the Fort Nelson airport entitled "The Rise and Fall of the Fort Nelson Airport" written A. Nonymous (W.W. Kelland) dating from ca. 1968.
