    Administrative history

The Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) operates under the mandate to “record Alberta workers’ stories of their lives and collective struggles and disseminate those stories to encourage discussion both about the histories of working people and what they teach us today about how working people might work collectively to create the best conditions possible in their workplaces and communities.”

ALHI was founded in Edmonton in 1999 by a volunteer group of union activists, historians, archivists, and others to collect, preserve, and distribute the history of Albertan working people. ALHI members collect oral histories in video and audio form from workers in a wide variety of industries and unions, which are then disseminated online and used as the research basis of publications, workshops, and other special presentations.

ALHI contributed publications, posters, and videos for the 100th anniversary of the Alberta Federation of Labour in 2012, has hosted conferences on labour history, and commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Gainers strike with a series of events and publications in 2016. ALHI is currently engaged in commemorating the centennial of labour strife across Alberta in 1919 through events, workshops, and publications.

    Custodial history

The records were created and maintained by the Alberta Labour History Institute and donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2015 and 2017.

    Scope and content

The fonds consists of records related to ALHI’s mandate to collect and preserve oral histories from Albertan workers. Each video and audio cassette contains an oral history and is identified by date, participant, and subject matter. There are multiple copies on different media of most of the oral history recordings, with digital copies backed up on the 4 hard disk drives. The textual records consist of signed release forms completed by the participants, which stipulate that the recordings may be disseminated for research purposes and made publically available.

As a whole, there are dozens of different oral histories on a variety of labour-related topics including union activism (with a host of unions represented), the experiences of women in the work force, the experiences of visible minorities in the work force, and significant events such as strikes, lock-outs, organizing campaigns, and the daily lives of Albertan workers.
