The Fisheries Division was established in 1930 when the administration of provincial natural resources was transferred from the Dominion of Canada to the Province of Alberta. In May 1937, responsibility for fisheries was transferred from the Department of Lands and Mines to the Department of Agriculture.

The Fish and Game Branch was established in 1937 when the Game Branch and Fisheries Branch were transferred from Lands and Mines to Agriculture. The Branch was returned to Lands and Mines in 1941.

When the Department of Lands and Mines was dissolved in 1949, the Department of Lands and Forests took over the responsibility of fisheries.
