    Biographical history

    Barney Thorvardur Stephanson was born in Elfros, Saskatchewan in 1918. He graduated from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Manitoba before joining the faculty of the University of Alberta in 1946 as a Professor of Agricultural Engineering. He retired from the University in 1983.

    He married Ida Magwood in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1946, and together they had five children. He died in Edmonton in 1990.

    The fonds consists of a history of the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Alberta written in 1965 by B.T. Stephanson. The fonds also includes a biography of John Macgregor Smith, the first head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    In 1966, Professor Thomas Preston of the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Alberta donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. It’s unknown how Thomas Preston obtained custody of the material.
