    Administrative history

    The Game Branch was transferred to the Department of Lands and Mines from the Department of Agriculture in 1936. In 1937, it was returned to the Department of Agriculture as part of the new Fish and Game Branch.

    The Game Branch was established in 1922 when the Office of the Chief Game and Fire Guardian changed its name. The Branch was transferred to the Department of Lands and Mines in 1936.

    Administrative history

    The Game Branch was created in 1941 when the responsibility of the administration of game was returned to the Department Lands and Mines from the Department of Agriculture. When the Department of Lands and Mines was dissolved in 1949, the Department of Lands and Forests took over the responsibility of wildlife.

    The Fish and Game Branch was formed in 1955 when the Fisheries Branch and the Game Branch were combined.

    The Wildlife Branch was formed in 1979 when the Fish and Wildlife Division was transferred to the Department of Energy and Natural Resources from the Department of Recreation, Parks and Wildlife. In 1981, the Branch was renamed the Wildlife Management Branch.

    Administrative history

    Previously part of Energy and Natural Resources, the Wildlife Management Branch became part of Forestry, Lands and Wildlife in 1986 and continued within it until the Ministry ceased in 1993.

    The Game Branch was transferred from the Department of Lands and Mines to the new Department of Lands and Forests in 1949. In 1955, it combined with the Fisheries Branch to form the Fish and Game Branch.

    The Wildlife Management Division was formed in 1992. It managed the populations and habitats of Alberta’s birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. In 1997, the division joined with the Fisheries Management Division to form the Fisheries and Wildlife Management Division.

    The Fisheries and Wildlife Management Division was formed in 1997 when the Fisheries Management Division and the Wildlife Management Division were merged. It continued within the Department of Environmental Protection until 1999.

    The Fisheries and Wildlife Management Division was transferred from the Department of Environmental Protection in 1999. In 2001, it was transferred to the new Department of Sustainable Resource Development.

    The Fish and Wildlife Division was formed in 1975. It was responsible for managing Alberta’s fish and wildlife resources in order to maintain an optimum level and distribution of such resources for the benefit, reward, gain and enjoyment of the people; and to promote legislation, knowledge, attitudes and resource information to support the primary goal. The division continued within the Department of Recreation, Parks and Wildlife until 1979.
