    Biographical history

William Charles Cable was born on 15 December 1897 in Hendon, Middlesex, England, to William John and Mary Ann (Hemberger) Cable. William was the first of three children, his siblings being Constance Mary (born 1899) and Stanley Arnold (born 1908).

In 1914, at the age of 17, William Cable joined the British Army at the outbreak of the First World War and was enlisted as a private in the 16th County of London Battalion of the London Regiment (Queen’s Westminsters). He served in France and was wounded in battle in January, 1915 and subsequently discharged from active service in April, 1916.

Following the war, Cable immigrated to Canada, arriving in St. John’s, Newfoundland in December, 1919, before heading west to British Columbia and then to Pincher Creek, Alberta, where he joined the Canadian militia and served with the 2nd Alberta Mounted Rifles.

In 1926 he married Mary Charlotte Brooks and later found work in the federal civil service as an assistant at the Waterton Lakes National Park fish hatchery before being transferred to a fish hatchery at Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta, in 1929. William would again be transferred in 1940 to the fish hatchery in Jasper National Park, where he would work as superintendent until his retirement in 1958.

After his retirement, William and Mary moved to Edmonton, where they were active with the Kiwanis Club and their church. William died on 12 March 1966 and Mary on 21 September 1986.
