The Office of the Provincial Chief Coroner was established in 1927. Its name was changed to the Chief Medical Examiner in 1977.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was established in 1977 when the name of the Office of the Provincial Chief Coroner was changed as a result of the Fatality Inquiries Act (S.A. 1976, c. 66). The Office was transferred to Justice in 1992.

The series consists of records pertaining to the operations of the Calgary Regional Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The files include minutes of staff meetings; correspondence of the Chief Medical Examiner; as well as information relating to attendance at conferences; relationships with government departments including the Alberta Health Care Insurance Commission, the Provincial Board of Health, and the Fatality Review Board; and the Office’s liaisons with universities, funeral home associations, and medical organizations including the National Association of Chief Coroners, and the Alberta Medical Association. The files also contain information regarding subjects such as traffic signs, organ donation, legislation, and safety awareness campaigns.
