    Administrative history

In 1871, the Ontario Manufacturers Association formed with the mandate to advocate on behalf of Manufacturers in Ontario and promote Canadian made products. In 1877, the Ontario Manufacturers Association changed its name to the Canadian Manufacturers Association (CMA). In 1902, the CMA received a Dominion Charter. In 1919, the CMA established Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie, and Pacific Divisions.

In 1943, the Canadian Exporters Association (CEA) formed. In 1954, the CMA established a Newfoundland branch, and the Maritimes Division became the Atlantic Division. In 1962, the CMA split the Prairie Divisions into Manitoba/Saskatchewan and Alberta branches. In 1987, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan established separate divisions.

In 1996, the CMA and the CEA merged to form the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters. The Canadian Association of Provincial Research Organizations (APRO) then joined The Alliance. In 2000, the Alliance changed its name to the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME). 75% of the total manufacturing production and 90% of Canada's Exporters hold membership with the CME.

The Calgary Branch of the CME formed in 1929. The Alberta Division of the CME currently maintains branches in Calgary, and Edmonton.
