    Administrative history

In 1984, a group of former and current Camsell staff members, organized by former head nurse Elva Taylor, formed the Charles Camsell History Committee. The Committee successfully applied for a grant from the New Horizons Program (a federal government funding program for senior-led projects) to fund the creation of a history book on the Charles Camsell Hospital. The result was the publication of the ''Camsell Mosaic: The Charles Camsell Hospital 1945-1985'' (1985). The book consists primarily of recollections of employees, patients, volunteers, teachers, doctors, and others with connections to the hospital. It features photographs of patients and staff, and detailed histories of the hospital's facilities, activities, treatments, and social life.

The Committee planned to record the difficulties encountered in locating First Nations and Inuit persons suffering from tuberculosis and the adjustments of patients to treatment, to one another, to dietary changes as well as language and cultural barriers. The Committee also hoped to demonstrate the dedication of the early staff members to their work, and to highlight the working relationships with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and the Department of Transport in transporting patients from northern communities.

The objectives of the History Committee were: to provide a record of the uniqueness of the Hospital, its development, the persons and area served, and the changes in scope of medical treatment; to provide a medium whereby medical superintendents, members of the medical staff, department heads and other staff could record historical information, work performed, services provided and humorous anecdotes; to provide a permanent record of selected articles and poetry written by the Inuit and First Nations patients for the Camsell Arrow, the Hospital publication; and to work in cooperation with the administration of the Charles Camsell Hospital to complete a history spanning the forty year period of its operation. The committee received additional grants for the publication of the Mosaic from the Government of Alberta, Ministry of Culture, Historical Resources Division.

Several of the members of the Charles Camsell History Committee would go on to join the later formed Charles Camsell Historical Society in 1989, including the Committee's founder, Elva Taylor.

    Custodial history

The records in this series were deposited in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in several accessions between 1987 and 1997. The first accession of records was deposited in the Archives by a former staff member of the Charles Camsell Hospital. In 1991 a collection of artefacts and archival documents was donated to the Provincial Museum of Alberta. The artefacts were kept by the Museum, and the documentary material was transferred to the Archives. A second accession of records was deposited in 1991 by a former staff member of the Charles Camsell Hospital via the Provincial Museum of Alberta. A former patient of the Hospital deposited an accession of records in the Archives in 1992. Another former staff member and member of the Charles Camsell History Committee deposited three accessions of records in the Archives between 1992 and 1996. The final accession of records deposited in the Archives in 1997 came from the estate of a former staff member of the Charles Camsell Hospital.

Records collected and maintained by the Historic Committee for the research and publication of the Mosaic, were donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta between 1987 and 1991, and arranged as part of the Charles Camsell Hospital fonds (PR0383) to form the Charles Camsell Hospital History Committee records series (PR0383.0001). The Charles Camsell History Committee and the later formed Charles Camsell Historical Society shared many of the same members, and many of the records donated by the Historical Society between 1991 and 1997 were arranged under the History Committee series (PR0383.001). A separate fonds for the Historical Society (PR0034) was established in 1998.
