    Historia biográfica

    Charles Wilson Cross was born in Madoc, Ontario in 1872 to Thomas and Marie Cross. He received his education at Upper Canada College (1888-1890), the University of Toronto (1890-1895), and Osgoode Hall, where he received his BA and LLB degrees.

    After articling with a Toronto law firm, he moved to Edmonton in 1897 and opened a law practice with William Shortt. He married Annie L. Lynde (1874-1947) in 1900. and together they had three children: Thomas (1901-1977), Helen (Bigelow) (1903-1993), and Margaret (Randall) (1910-1971).

    He was elected as a Liberal MLA in 1905 for the Edmonton electoral district (1905-1917) and the Edson electoral district (1913-1925); he held two seats simultaneously between 1913 and 1917. He served as Attorney General (1905-1910, 1912-1918). He resigned as an MLA in 1925 to pursue federal politics.

    He was elected as a Liberal MP in 1925 for the Athabaska electoral district. He was defeated in the 1926 election.

    He died in Edmonton in 1928.

    The fonds consists of records related to the life and career of Charles W. Cross. The photographs depict Charles W. Cross and the Cross house in Edmonton, Alberta. The textual records were created and received by Charles W. Cross during his tenure as Attorney General of Alberta and include correspondence, reports and other records related to legislation, prisoners, lawyers and the legal profession, railways, vital statistics, doctors and the medical profession, timber, hunting, liquor, and personal matters such as his letter of resignation and last will and testament.

    Mr. Thomas L. Cross deposited records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in two separate accessions in 1976. The records related to Charles W. Cross as Attorney General were transferred through government records schedules 1975/011 and 1983/059.
