    Administrative history

    The federal Department of the Interior was established in 1873 and had control over the land and natural resources of the Northwest Territories, including forest, water and mineral resources. When the Province of Alberta was established in 1905, the Department continued to control these resources until 1930, when the responsibility for their management was transferred to the Government of Alberta (S.C. 1930, c. 3). The Department disbanded in 1936.

    The Mines Branch was established in 1905 when it was transferred to the Government of Alberta. It was transferred to the Provincial Secretary in1920.

    The Mines Branch was transferred from Public Works to Provincial Secretary in 1920. It was transferred to Executive Council in 1924.

    Administrative history

    The Mines Branch was transferred from Provincial Secretary to Executive Council in 1924. It became part of the new Ministry of Lands and Mines in 1930.

    Administrative history

    The Mines Branch had its origins as the Coal Mines Branch of the Department of Public Works in 1905. The name was changed to the Mines Branch in 1914. It was under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Secretary from 1920 to 1924 and under the Executive Council from 1924-1931. In 1949 it became the Mines Division in the new Department of Mines and Minerals.

    Administrative history

    The Mines Division was created in 1949 when the Department of Mines and Minerals was created. It had previously been the Mines Branch within the Department of Lands and Mines. The function of the division was to administer the regulations necessary for the operations of coal mines and quarries (The Coal Mines Regulation Act, RSA, 1970, c. 52). In 1971, the Division was transferred to the Energy Resources Conservation Board.

    Administrative history

    The Energy Resources Conservation Board was established on June 1, 1971 under the Energy Resources Conservation Act (S.A. 1971, c. 30) as a continuation of the Oil and Gas Conservation Board. The Energy Resources Conservation Act was proclaimed on January 1, 1972, and transferred administration of the Pipe Line Act (replaced by the Pipeline Act, 1975), the Coal Mines Regulation Act (which was replaced by the Coal Mines Safety Act in 1975), and the Quarries Regulation Act to the Energy Resources Conservation Board.

    It disbanded in 1995 with the passage of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board Act (S.A. 1994, c. A–19.5).

    Scope and content

    The series consists of records generated by the Mines Branch. The branch was established with the Coal Mines Act of 1906. It reported to the department of Public Works until 1920 when it reported to the Provincial Secretary. Starting in 1924, it reported to the Executive Council until the establishment of the Department of Lands and Mines in 1930. The Branch enforced the Coal Mines Act (later the Mines Act) and was responsible for inspections (relating to employment and the physical plant) and reporting on the amount and quality of coal produced by the Province.
