    Biographical history

Born in 1910, Donald James McBride was the Principal of the Edmonton Residential School from 1961 to 1966 when the administration of the school was transferred from the United Church of Canada to the Indian Affairs Branch, Government of Canada.

The Edmonton Residential School was founded in September 1923 in order to replace the Edmonton Industrial School, founded in 1920 to take the place of the Red Deer Industrial School which closed in 1919. The goal of the three schools was to educate Native children, in central Alberta, in an area served by the United Church of Canada. The Edmonton Residential School closed in 1975 a few years after Donald McBride's retirement from his teaching career.

Donald McBride was active in several fields of interest. In an earlier part of his life, from 1945 to 1950, he served as Secretary of the Fairview Credit Union.

He married Margaret Story, and together they had two children: Gerald and Gareth. He died in Edmonton in 1997.
