    Hugh Horner was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan in 1925. He married Jean Findlay (1927-2007) in 1947, and together they had five children: Rick, Bruce, Dave, Donald and Doug. He graduated from medical school at the University of Western Ontario in 1949.

    After moving to Barrhead, he became involved in federal politics, serving as an MP for the Jasper-Edson electoral district from 1958 to 1967 before resigning his seat to run as a provincial politician. He was elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA in 1967 for the Lac-St.-Anne electoral district (1967-1971) and the Barrhead electoral district (1971-1979). He served as Deputy Premier (1971-1979), Minister of Agriculture (1971-1975), Minister of Highways and Transport (1975-1979), and Minister of Economic Development (1979). He resigned his seat in October 1979.

    After leaving office, he served as the chair of the federal Grain Transportation Authority (1979-1980) and acted as a consultant on agricultural issues. He also served as the chairman of Fletcher's Fine Foods (1981-1991). He was named to the Alberta Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1988.

    He died in Edmonton in 1997.

    Portée et contenu

    The fonds consists of the records created and received by Hugh Horner during his tenure as Minister of Agriculture (1971-1975) as well as agriculture-related reference materials (1945-1967) assembled by Horner. The fonds also includes two photographs featuring members of the House of Commons dating from 1961.

    Source immédiate d'acquisition

    In 1993, Hugh Horner allowed the Provincial Archives of Alberta to copy the photographs from 1961. The ministerial records were acquired by donation in 2006.
