            Series · 1917-1990

The series consists of records related to the licensing and inspection of theatres, entertainment halls (which include local community halls), places of public assembly, and projectionists, including records related to travelling amusements held at various entertainment facilities.

For theatres and entertainment halls, the files include correspondence, inspection forms, some building plans, and copies of licenses issued by the business unit. Some files pertain to inquiries and submissions of returns by theatres or halls pertaining to the Amusement Tax. The records also include an index of licenses (1967-1976) indicating the renewal of the license and the contact person for the facility. It also includes copies of individual travelling amusement licenses pertaining to circuses, stampedes, special screenings of films, concerts, recitals, ballet performances, and other one-time or short term events.

For projectionists, the files include correspondence with individual projectionists regarding their status as well copies of examinations for the various classes of projectionist. The records also include an index to projectionists working in the province, including the date they were licensed, the theatres at which they worked, and the class of license held. The records date from the 1920s to 1980, when the requirement for licensing projectionists was removed in an amendment to the Amusements Act (S.A. 1980, c. 1).
