    Biographical history

    Duncan Bruce MacMillan was born in Norland, Ontario in 1887. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1915-1919 and farmed in the area of Tees, Alberta. He married Margaret Steele (1893-1964) in 1922, and together they had two children, Kaye (Taylor) and Betty (Clement).

    He was elected as a Social Credit MLA in 1935 in the Lacombe electoral district. He served as Minister of Agriculture (1940-1948), Minister of Railways and Telephones (1948-1950), and Minister of Public Works (1948-1952). He retired at the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly in 1952.

    After leaving politics, he served on the Alberta Liquor Control Board from 1955-1958. He died in Edmonton in 1962.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of the records of Duncan Macmillan created and received during his tenure as the Minister of Public Works. The files pertain to administration of the Department of Public Works, interdepartmental relations, highways, roads, ferries, oil sands, swimming pools, liaison with stakeholder groups such as the Alberta Motor Association and the Canadian Good Roads Association.
