    Administrative history

The Edmonton Opera Association (EOA) is one of the largest opera companies in Western Canada and serves as the centre of the Northern Alberta Opera Community. It was established in 1963 by ten stakeholder patrons and produced Madama Butterfly as its first professional production.

In 1965, the EOA hired Irving Guttman as its first full-time artistic director. By 1972, the EOA was producing several operas a season and had a membership base of about 6000 subscribers. In 1997, the EOA office moved into the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.

Over the course of its history, the EOA has won several awards including Best Opera Broadcast in 1978 and 1980 for its CBC production of Verdi's Attila. The EOA is a member company of Opera.ca and Opera America and attempts to be a leader in the production of opera for the region of Edmonton and Northern Alberta. Each year the EOA produces several full-length operas as well as mounting smaller operettas for festivals such as the Edmonton Fringe.
