    Administrative history

    The first public school in Edmonton was established in 1881 and operated on McKay Avenue. Edmonton School District No. 7 officially formed in 1885. Over the years, Edmonton School District grew to encompass numerous schools throughout the municipality of Edmonton. The Edmonton Public School Board currently operates elementary, junior, and high schools. A board consisting of trustees representing wards throughout the District governs the Board.

    According to their website, the Board represents the interests of the community and reflects the values of the community in its decision making; serves as an advocate of public education; sets priorities and policies to provide leadership and overall direction for the district; allocates resources to the district to fulfill its responsibilities; monitors the implementation of policies; evaluates the results achieved in the district; reports the results achieved to its public; serves as a communication bridge between the community and the district; and hires and evaluates the superintendent of schools.

    The fonds consists of material pertaining to the Edmonton Public School Board and includes bulletins and letters issued by the Board regarding student trips to Expo 67, and a copy of "The McKay Avenue School", a history of the first school in Edmonton written in 1946.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    In 1968, Bruce McCorquodale, Head Curator of the Provincial Museum of Alberta, donated the material comprising PR1968.0064 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He received the material from his children's school in 1967. In 1972, Henry M. Ward donated the material comprising PR1972.0113 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
