The Provincial Horticultural Station was established in 1935 when the Government of Alberta purchased a demonstration farm in Brooks that had been established originally by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1912. The Station changed its name to the Alberta Horticultural Research Centre in 1970.

The Provincial Horticultural Station changed its name in 1970 to the Alberta Horticultural Research Centre. It first appeared as its own branch on the Ministry's organization chart in 1981. In 1987, it was replaced by the Alberta Special Crops and Horticultural Research Centre.

The Alberta Special Crops and Horticultural Research Centre was formed when the Alberta Horticultural Research Centre both added a soil and water program and transferred out several existing programs to the Alberta Tree Nursery and Horticulture Centre and the Crop Protection Branch. The branch transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development when that Ministry was formed in 1992.

The series consists of the records pertaining to extension and library services provided by the agricultural research facility in Brooks. The files include newsletters, research and published articles from external organizations, internal reports and studies from the facility, and other related records.
