    Administrative history

    The Farm Women's Union of Alberta (FWUA) was established in January 1949 when the United Farmers of Alberta amalgamated with the Alberta Farmers' Union, becoming the Farmers' Union of Alberta. It ceased to exist in 1970 when the Farmers' Union of Alberta amalgamated with the Alberta Federation of Agriculture, becoming Unifarm; the women's organization became the Women of Unifarm.The FWUA aimed to attain a reasonable standard of living and economic security for farm people, and to promote an educational program for farm women; this included obtaining improved education, health and social welfare service, development citizenship and leadership, and striving for international peace.In 1949, the United Farmers of Alberta amalgamated with the Alberta Farmers Union, and became the Farmers' Union of Alberta; the women's organization became the Farm Women's Union of Alberta. When the Farmers' Union of Alberta became Unifarm in 1970, and the women's organization became the Women of Unifarm. Unifarm disbanded in 1996 and set up the Wild Rose Agricultural Producers which, being a producer organization, did not allow for a women's organization. The Women of Unifarm opted to continue as an independent and unaffiliated organization under their former name, until they themselves disbanded in 2000.The Farm Women's Union of Alberta operated in parallel to the Farmers' Union of Alberta.     Custodial history

    Mrs. Winifred Ross (PR1971.420), one-time president of the Farm Women’s Union of Alberta, and John O. Thompson, Winifred Ross’s grandson, (PR1977.113) deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1971 and 1977.

    Scope and content

    The sous-fonds consist of the records of the Farm Women’s Union of Alberta and includes the following sous-sous-fonds: Asker Local No. 902 sous-sous-fonds, County of Red Deer F.W.U.A sous-sous-fonds, Hillside Local No. 906 sous-sous-fonds, Horn Hill Local No. 1011 sous-sous-fonds, and West High River Local No. 1211 sous-sous-fonds. The sous-fonds also includes one series, Executive records, belonging to Winifred Ross, which includes minutes, correspondence, agendas, newsletters and newspaper clippings.
