Administrative history
The Provincial Lands Administration was formed in 1930. In 1930-31 it was called Provincial and School Lands. In 1935, the School Lands Branch separated out to become the division School Lands Administration. In 1938, Provincial Lands Administration and the School Lands Administration combined to become the Lands Administration.

In 1949, when the Department of Lands and Mines dissolved, administration of land was taken over by the Department of Lands and Forests.

The federal Department of the Interior was established in 1873 and had control over the land and natural resources of the Northwest Territories, including forest, water and mineral resources. When the Province of Alberta was established in 1905, the Department continued to control these resources until 1930, when the responsibility for their management was transferred to the Government of Alberta (S.C. 1930, c. 3). The Department disbanded in 1936.
