    Biographical history

    Marie Beatrice Gertrude Kenney was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1876. She married John Patrick Phelan MacDonald (1868-1920) in Montreal, Quebec in 1897, and together they had five children: John Kingsley (1898-1967), John Wilfred Earl Carlyle (1899 -1925), Shirley Graeme (1902-1984) and Lorraine (Patterson) (1912-1954).

    The family came to Edmonton, Alberta in 1911, where John was a doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. After her husband's death in 1920, Gertrude operated a boarding house from the 1920s to the 1940s.

    She married Ernest Scudamore George (1893-1962) in Calgary in 1927. She died in Edmonton in 1967.

    Custodial history

    In 1970, the Human History Division of the Provincial Museum of Alberta received the material from the E.S. George estate.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of material pertaining to the life of Gertrude George including notices, correspondence, appeals, and forms regarding the Wartime Prices and Trade Board; correspondence to tenants of Gertrude George's boarding house dating from the 1920s to the 1940s; insurance policies, correspondence, and receipts dating from the 1920s and the 1940s; death certificates of Gertrude George's first husband John Phelan MacDonald and her son, John Wilfred Earl Carlyle MacDonald; and twelve photographs featuring scenes of Norway dating from 1933.
