    Biographical history

Harry Strom was born in Burdett, Alberta in 1914. The family moved to Calgary, where he studied mechanics and received a certificate from the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art. He worked as a truck driver before returning to Burdett to take up ranching. He married Ruth Johnson (1917-2011) in 1938, and together they had six children: Howard, Faith, Beverly, Brian, Ronald, and Arlene.

He was involved with a variety of community organizations, including the Evangelical Free Church of Bow Island, the Forty Mile Rural Electrification Association, and the Burdett Home and School Association. He was also elected to a term on the council of the County of Forty Mile in 1941.

After his career in municipal politics, he was elected as a Social Credit MLA in 1955 for the Cypress electoral district. He served as Minister of Agriculture (1962-1968) and Minister of Municipal Affairs (1968) before becoming Premier of Alberta (1968-1971). After his defeat in the 1971 election, he remained as the Leader of the Opposition until 1972 and retained his seat as an MLA until 1975.

After retiring from politics, he worked in the church to help the poor, including an instrumental role in the fundraising initiative to build Edmonton's Hope Mission. He received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of Calgary (1969), the University of Lethbridge (1979), and the University of Alberta (1980).

He died in Edmonton in 1984.
