    Biographical history

Bessie Feakes, daughter of Robert Bloomfield Feakes, attended school in Darwin, England. In 1909, both Bessie and her husband, Harry Hodgkinson, received certification to teach elementary school in Alberta. In 1912, they homesteaded near Hughenden, Alberta. The Hodgkinsons had two sons, Robert and George.

During the Depression, the couple left the family farm; they boarded with more successful farmers as each took a teaching position. During this period, Harry took son Robert to live with him while Bessie took George.
