    Biographical history

Horst Adolph Louis Charles Schmid was born in Munich, Germany in 1933. He emigrated to Canada in 1952, working for gold mining companies in the Northwest Territories and taking correspondence courses in accounting, business psychology and business administration. He moved to Edmonton in 1956 and operated several businesses, including an accounting firm, a German restaurant and an export company. He hosted an ethnic music program on CKUA Radio. He became involved in politics, serving as campaign manager for Edmonton Progressive Conservative MP William Skoreyko in 1968. He married Arleen Dale Farnham (1941-2004) in 1960.

He was elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA in 1971 for the Edmonton-Avonmore electoral district. He served as Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation (1971-1975), Minister of Culture (1975-1979), Minister of Government Services (1975-1979), Minister of State for International Trade (1979-1986), and Minister of Tourism (1986). He was also the minister responsible for lotteries from 1974-1979. He was defeated in the 1986 provincial election.

After leaving politics, he was appointed Commissioner General for Trade and Tourism (1986-1995), a position supporting the activities of the Minister of Tourism and Minister of Economic Development. After leaving that position, he resumed his international exporting business and also served on the advisory boards or board of directors of a variety of international corporations and organizations.

The Samson Cree First Nation made him an honorary chief in 1977. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta in 1987.
