Howard Colwell (1888-1958) was born at Chelsea, Ontario. In 1906, he moved to Watrous, Saskatchewan, where he worked for the railway. In 1912, he joined his brother Bill in a homestead near Coates Lake.

Some time between 1915 and 1918, Howard left their homestead and moved to Compeer, where he purchased a livery barn and dray business. He was also an elevator agent for Searle Grain Co., an agent for Imperial Oil and the Sheriff. In 1946, Howard Colwell was recognized by the Grain Insurance Guarantee Company for his work in elevator fire prevention. He retired in 1947, after suffering a stroke. His son, Mervin, took over the dray business.

In 1918, Howard Colwell married Jean Wilkie, the daughter of Scots immigrant homesteaders who had spent part of her childhood in Africa. Howard and Jean Colwell had three sons, Howard Francis (1921-1927), Larry and Mervin (1932-2000).

Howard died in Edmonton in 1958. After his death, Jean moved to Los Angeles and married Dr. W.A. Clark in 1960.
