    Biographical history

    Hugh Planche was born in Calgary in 1931. He attended the University of Alberta, receiving a business administration degree in 1952. He married Elizabeth Barclay in Los Angeles in 1952. He then worked in various capacities in the Alberta oil and gas industry, including serving as president of Brooks Tube Limited, a steel mill in Southern Alberta.

    He was elected as Progressive Conservative MLA in 1975 for the Calgary-Glenmore electoral district. He served as Minister of Economic Development (1979-1986). He retired at the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly in 1986.

    After leaving office, he briefly worked for the provincial government on a contract related to the Crow freight subsidy before returning to the private sector, where he held several corporate directorships and operated his own holding company. He also served as a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).

    The fonds consists of the records created and received by Hugh Planche as an MLA and as Minister of Economic Development (1979-1986). The files include general subject files relating to constituency and personal matters as well as departmental operational matters as industries and trade missions; general and miscellaneous correspondence files; correspondence with businesses, other countries, provinces, provincial government departments and various divisions of the Department; chronological files, including those of Geoff Davey and J. Jenning; subject files, including press releases, and Requests for Cabinet
    Decision forms and budgets, relating to the administration of the Department.
