    Biographical history

    Dr. Ian Wilson Carlyle Reid was born in Bradford, England in 1931. He graduated from medical school at the University of Aberdeen in 1955, the same year that he married Dr. Anne Mitchell (1931-2003). Together they had two children: Neil and David. They moved to Edmonton in 1955, serving as resident physicians at Edmonton's University Hospital before moving to Hinton to establish their medical practice.

    He was elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA for the electoral districts of Edson (1979-1986) and West Yellowhead (1986-1989). He served as Solicitor General (1983-1986), Minister of Labour (1986-1989), and Minister of the Environment (1988-1989). He was defeated in the 1989 provincial election.

    After leaving office, Reid continued to practice medicine in Edmonton. He died in Edmonton in 2016.

    The fonds consists of records created and received by Ian Reid during his tenure as Minister of Labour. The files include correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, budgets, and subject files pertaining to labour relations, unions, legislation, asbestos, departmental administration, employment standards, mediation and arbitration, strikes, pensions, boilers, fire prevention, elevators, the Alberta Human Rights Commission, liaison activities with associations and societies, the Mindbender roller coaster, the construction industry, and other topics.
