The collection also contains The Cadomin Project, a teaching unit developed by Jim Shaw, Director of the Educational Media Services at the University of Alberta. The teaching unit was created as part of a series of units on small towns across Alberta and used photos, slides, recordings, and other media to teach in elementary and secondary schools.

This unit consists of slides and copies of photographs of subjects in Cadomin in the Alberta Coal Branch, as well as supplemental information, all with a focus on the social history of Cadomin.

There is also a scrapbook that includes clippings related to the Coal Branch and its residents, correspondence with other former Coal Branch residents, membership lists of Coal Branch unions, obituaries of Coal Branch residents, and short biographical sketches of Coal Branch residents.

The fonds is comprised mostly of operational and published records of the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW). The fonds also includes some records collected from related organizations such as the Canadian Association of Social Workers. The records in this fonds were created prior to the ACSW divesting itself of professional association functions, and so the records depict and represent a mix of professional association and regulatory college functions.

Textual records are comprised of conference and workshop programs and correspondence, annual reports, news releases, minutes, operational records and correspondence about ads, reports produced by ACSW members, and some proclamations and award certificates. The textual records also include copies of “The Advocate,” a publication used to inform ACSW membership of College activities and of issues of relevance to social workers in Alberta.

The fonds also contains many photographic records and negatives. These depict conference speakers and attendees, groups of social workers, award and certificate ceremonies, and workshops, among several other subjects. Some of these were sorted with individual labels and others received labels with dates and events depicted. However, most of the photographs were labeled only with approximate dates.

The audiovisual records include two recordings of panel meetings in 2002 about the Health Information Act and the impacts it would have on social workers in Alberta, an ACSW infomercial on income support, and excerpts from “Dance Like a Butterfly” (a play by Aviva Ravel). Audio records on audiocassettes include an ACSW radio message on government service cuts, radio ads and infomercials for ACSW, and the radio ads from BC Social Workers that Alberta ads were based on. The fonds also contains many born-digital records created by the ACSW that were originally stored on floppy discs, CDs, and other drives.

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is an independent, industry funded, quasi-judicial agency of the Government of Alberta that regulates the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s resources in the public interest. Under The Responsible Energy Development Act (REDA), the AER is the single regulator for upstream oil, gas, oil sands and coal projects in Alberta. The AER functions to provide safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of energy resources. The AER is mandated under one or more of the eight provincial energy statutes to make decisions on applications for energy development, monitoring for compliance assurance, decommissioning of developments, and all other aspects of energy resource activities. This authority extends to allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment as related to energy resource activities. In 2021-22, the Mineral Resource Development Act was passed giving the Alberta Energy Regulator further responsibilities for the full lifecycle of Alberta’s mineral resources. Also in 2021-22, the Alberta Energy Regulator was established as the lifecycle geothermal regulator to administer and issue geothermal tenure rights.

The fonds consists of records related to ALHI’s mandate to collect and preserve oral histories from Albertan workers. Each video and audio cassette contains an oral history and is identified by date, participant, and subject matter. There are multiple copies on different media of most of the oral history recordings, with digital copies backed up on the 4 hard disk drives. The textual records consist of signed release forms completed by the participants, which stipulate that the recordings may be disseminated for research purposes and made publically available.

As a whole, there are dozens of different oral histories on a variety of labour-related topics including union activism (with a host of unions represented), the experiences of women in the work force, the experiences of visible minorities in the work force, and significant events such as strikes, lock-outs, organizing campaigns, and the daily lives of Albertan workers.

The fonds consists of records created by the Alberta Motor Transport Board and its predecessor the Highway Traffic Board.

The Highway Traffic Board was formed in 1936 when the Public Service Vehicles Act replaced The Public Vehicles Act. In 1974, the Board was renamed the Motor Transport Board. Under the Alberta Motor Transport Act, the Board acted as an autonomous quasi-judicial tribunal and dealt with intra and extra provincial motor carrier and bus matters. The Board also had delegated authority from the federal government by virtue of the Motor Vehicle Transport Act. In 1999, the Board merged with the Driver Control Board to form the Alberta Transportation Safety Board.

The records in the fonds consist of the operational records of the Board and are divided into five series.

These records contain branch general files, operational files, administrative files. mortgage application files and correspondence, policies and procedures, program records from Rural and Native Housing, and project and committee files from the Planning Services Branch.

The records also contain maps of Alberta Reserves located in Treaties 6 and 7, maps of Métis settlements and municipal districts, and correspondence on the municipal utilities of the Sarcee Indian Reserve.

The records include minutes and agendas from board meetings, council minutes, annual reports and meeting packages, finances, training and professional development packages, evaluation and training packages, and financial records. Other textual records include mailouts, samples of the forms used and created by the Alberta Museums Association, correspondence, grant applications, planning files, conference and retreat files, orientation files, formation documents, newsletters, and other publications. These records document the administrative functions and activities of the association and its executive.

These records also include correspondence and administrative files from collaboration or support with other organizations, such as several Albertan museums, Alberta Heritage School Fairs, and the Canadian Museums Association. The organizations represented in these fonds are all organizations which the Alberta Museums Association collaborated with and supported, and the records show how it did so.

Also included are numerous photographic records, including transparency slides, negatives, and photographic prints. These records document association activities, and depict museums and exhibits, events, conferences, staff, and presentations. Many of these photographs are labeled and in binders or albums whereas some others were sorted into slide reels or not yet sorted.
