The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is an independent, industry funded, quasi-judicial agency of the Government of Alberta that regulates the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s resources in the public interest. Under The Responsible Energy Development Act (REDA), the AER is the single regulator for upstream oil, gas, oil sands and coal projects in Alberta. The AER functions to provide safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of energy resources. The AER is mandated under one or more of the eight provincial energy statutes to make decisions on applications for energy development, monitoring for compliance assurance, decommissioning of developments, and all other aspects of energy resource activities. This authority extends to allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment as related to energy resource activities. In 2021-22, the Mineral Resource Development Act was passed giving the Alberta Energy Regulator further responsibilities for the full lifecycle of Alberta’s mineral resources. Also in 2021-22, the Alberta Energy Regulator was established as the lifecycle geothermal regulator to administer and issue geothermal tenure rights.
