Fonds consists of Rutherford’s personal and business records, particularly records created in his capacity as a lawyer and as a politician. These records include political papers, financial records, ordinances, proceedings, policies, reports, publications, personal records, photographs, diplomas, newspapers and newspaper clippings. Also included in this fonds are a newspaper clipping and photograph dated after Rutherford’s death. These two items were interfiled with Rutherford’s papers when they were deposited in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1975. They probably belonged to a member of Rutherford’s family and so were maintained within accession PR1975.0518.

Arthur Sifton fonds

The fonds consists of a passport issued to Sifton on 17 May, 1916 and renewed on 17 May, 1920. Sifton held this passport during the final years of his tenure as Premier of Alberta. He used the passport to travel to Versailles, France as a member of the Canadian Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers of the First World War.

The photographs depict the 1951 Royal Visit, during which Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Phillip visited all the Canadian provinces. The photographs depict their visit to Edmonton in October, and two are labeled on the reverse with the date and people present. In one of these photos where Princess Elizabeth is making an address, Premier Manning and Lieutenant Governor Bowden are also present.

One of the photographs is labeled with “Brander Studios,” and it is likely that the photographs were taken by a photographer who worked there.

The fonds consists of records created or received by Ernest C. Manning during his tenure as the Premier of Alberta. The files include records generated by the activities of Herbert Greenfield, John E. Brownlee, Richard G. Reid, and William Aberhart as Premier that Manning received upon taking office.

The fonds also includes materials relating to Manning's external activities of the Premier, including speeches, radio broadcasts, correspondence, as well as records pertaining to the Prophetic Bible Institute, the Alberta Social Credit League, as well as Aberhart's and Manning’s constituency records.

The records contain correspondence, memorandum, reports, meeting minutes, agendas, legislation, submissions from organizations, newspaper clippings, invitations, registers of incoming mail, and other records containing diverse information regarding all aspects of government administration, including:

  • Agriculture, including schools, livestock, dairying, wheat and other crops, relief plans, the Alberta Wheat Pool, marketing, land settlement, cooperatives, and agricultural colonies, drought, soil erosion and conservation;

  • Justice, including acts and legislation, police, judges, gambling, prisons, and law enforcement generally;

The fonds also includes a file of financial accounts of the Alberta Hotel Licenses "Help Win The War Fund" administered by Manning as well as letters patent appointing Manning as Provincial Treasurer (1944), Minister of Mines and Minerals (1952) and Attorney General (1955). It also includes a small volume of records created by Manning after leaving office.

The newspaper clippings include articles regarding provincial elections, the activities of the Premier and those of each minister of the provincial government, and of Alberta’s political parties.
