    Biographical history

    John Elwood Horsnell Kells was born on October 1, 1931 in Brockville, Ontario. During his life, he worked five years in the merchant marines, travelling much of the world. He then worked for 25 years across Alberta in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, including at Rocky Mountain House, Derwent, St. Albert, and K Division in Edmonton.

    He closed his career working 15 years as the Director of Security with the Alberta Racing Commission. He passed away on November 9, 2005 in Edmonton, Alberta.

    Custodial history

    The records were donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta by Lynn Kasha, the daughter of John Kells. The photographer or photographers are unknown, but some photographs were likely taken by John Kells and all the photographs were collected by him..

    Scope and content

    This collection consists of 42 photographs from throughout Alberta, mostly depicting Indigenous leaders, people, and camps. Many of these photos were taken in photo studios, with the Indigenous people wearing outfits and regalia specifically for the photographs. There are also photographs of race carts, Alberta scenery, a train, and worker groups, among several others.
