    Biographical history

    Alan D. Ridge was born in Brighton, England in 1926. He attended University College, London and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History in 1947. In 1948, he received a diploma in Archives Administration from the same institute. The following year the Members Library of the London County Council hired Ridge as a Historical Research Assistant. In the early 1950's Ridge became an assistant Archivist in the Greater London Record Office. In 1958, he was appointed the Head of the Records and Registry Service of the National Coal Board.

    In 1962, Ridge came to Montreal to establish and administer the archival program at McGill University. In this capacity he also taught records management courses through the Faculty of Extension as well as giving seminars on archives administration in the Faculty of Library Science. In 1968, Alan Ridge succeeded Hugh Taylor as Provincial Archivist of Alberta. During his tenure as Provincial Archivist, Ridge acquired over 4,000 accessions totaling over 5 linear miles, initiated the records management program in the provincial government, and served throughout his term as the Secretary of the provincial Public Records Committee. He retired as Provincial Archivist in 1984.

    Alan Ridge held membership with the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), the Alberta Society of Archivists (ASA), the Historical Society of Alberta (HSA), the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) as well as other archival organizations. He also taught archival courses at the University of Alberta. In 1983, he became a Member of the Institute of Certified Records Managers' Board of Regents. He then was appointed a Fellow the Society of American Archivists. In 1985, he became inducted into the Order of Canada.

    Alan Ridge passed away in 1997.

    The collection consists of material pertaining to the Koto Concert, held by the Provincial Museum of Alberta for the Consulate of Japan, including a program, invitations, and tickets dating from 1968.
