Biographical history

Maria Bojarczuk was born on 20 April 1921 in Smoky Lake, Alberta to Sam and Tekla (Lototski) Bojarczuk. The Bojarczuk family had a homestead near Smoky Lake where Maria grew up. During the Second World War, Maria worked at the No. 32 Elementary Flying Training School, established by the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan near Bowden, Alberta. The school was established to train flight crews for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Maria Bojarczuk moved to Ontario in 1943 and worked as a nurse in the Cornwall Sanitarium and at an ammunition factory in Ajax in 1944-45. She married Albert Helie of Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1946 and the couple then moved to Niagara Falls, New York and remained there.

Maria Bojarczuk died in Niagara Falls, NY on 21 April 2022.

Custodial history

The records were created and maintained by Maria Bojarczuk and donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta by her daughter, Patricia Ann McGrath, in 2014.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs and negatives that depict subjects at No. 32 Elementary Flying Training School in Bowden, Alberta during the Second World War. Many of the subjects are identified and include images of Maria Bojarczuk, her friends, and students from the flight school as well as some local residents. There are extensive images of students, events, buildings, and equipment at the flight school.
