Administrative history
Memorial Salem United Church was a congregation in the South Alberta Presbytery of Alberta and Northwest Conference of the United Church of Canada. Until 1949, it was part of Medicine Hat Presbytery. Its roots date back to 1904 for the Presbyterians and 1913 for the Methodists.
In 1904, the East End Presbyterian Mission held meetings in homes. Knox Presbyterian Church, actually an old storage building, was named in 1907. A new frame church was built in 1913 and was used for Sunday School once a brick structure was completed in 1920. At that time, it was renamed Memorial to honour the military of World War I.
Washington Avenue Methodist Church was established in 1913. With the formation of the United Church of Canada in 1925, the two amalgamated to form Memorial United Church. From 1938 until 1948, the congregation shared a minister with the church in Redcliff.
Salem United Church (originally Salem Congregational Church) had remained separate with services in German but in 1948, it came together with Memorial to form Memorial Salem United Church. A bilingual minister, George Spady, was called and services were offered in both English and German until 1967.
In 1994, the Memorial Salem United Church congregation moved their services to Southview Community School. In 1997 Memorial Salem United Church amalgamated with Fifth Avenue United Church to become Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church.
