    Biographical history

    Neil McLeod was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1907, but lived most of his life in Alberta. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1933. While still training in "Dept" Division, Regina, he was sent to Flin Flon, Manitoba to help settle a violent miners' strike. On his return, he served in various locations, including Bashaw, Tofield, Westlock, St. Paul, Jasper and Edmonton.; While posted in Jasper in the 1940s, Neil was asked to pose for what became a famous national image used on postcards and other promotional materials for the RCMP and the Canadian government.The photo was the "Mountie on horseback" photo by Harry Rowed. The stallion was owned by the Prince of Wales.

    May McLeod (Steeves) was born in New Brunswick in 1914. She attended Mount Royal College in Calgary, then worked in Jasper where her father was Superintendent of the Canadian National Railway. Neil and May were married in 1940. They adopted their daughter, Sandra, who was born in 1951, and died tragically of leukemia in 1965.

    Neil McLeod died in 1993 and May McLeod died in 1999.

    The fonds consists of family photographs and negatives, letters and other material of the McLeod and Steeves families; photographs and negatives, reports and notes kept by Neil McLeod in his time as an RCMP officer; and miscellaneous photographs and negatives, and textual material created and collected by Neil McLeod and his family. The fonds consists of the following series: McLeod-Steeves Family series, Royal Canadian Mounted Police series, Miscellaneous series.
