The Pingle Drug & Book Company was established in 1898 in Medicine Hat, North-West Territories. In 1902, Charles Stewart Pingle purchased the drug business that had previously been owned by Daniel Black.
Pingle served as an alderman for Medicine Hat from 1910 until 1912 and served as president of the Board of Trade in 1908, 1909 and 1910. He was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Redcliffe in 1913, was reelected in 1920, and later served as speaker from 1920 until 1922. He served as MLA for Medicine Hat from 1925 until his death in 1928.
The Pingle Drug & Book Company was purchased by the Louis K. Liggett Company of Toronto in September 1945.

The fonds consists of the Pingle Drug & Book Company's register of liquor sold to permit holders in Medicine Hat.

Immediate source of acquisition
Donald King donated the records to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1979. Donald King had been a delivery boy and later apprentice at the Pingle Drug & Book Company in the 1930s.
