The Provincial Lands Division was formed in 1938 when the Provincial Lands Administration combined with the School lands Division to form the Lands Administration. In 1949, when the Department of Lands and Mines dissolved, administration of land was taken over by the Department of Lands and Forests.

In 1935, the School Lands Branch separated out to become the division School Lands Administration. The office of the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Land and Forest Service was formed in 1992. In January of 1993, the transfer order was filed which transferred the program areas from Forestry, Lands and Wildlife to the new Department. The Land and Forest Service was responsible for the proper use, management, allocation, and protection of Alberta’s public lands. It continued within Environmental Protection until 1999.
