    Biographical history

    R.J. (Robert John) Dinning was born in Ontario in 1884. He came to Edmonton, Alberta in 1902 and later moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to work for the Merchants' Bank (now Bank of Montreal). In 1910 he married Sidney Bentley and together they had one son, Jack, and two daughters, Margaret and Dorothy.

    In 1924 Dinning became chairman of the Alberta Liquor Control Board and the family moved back to Edmonton. In 1942 the family moved again to Calgary, Alberta where Dinning became the executive vice-president, later president, of Burns and Company Limited.

    Dinning held many other executive positions in both his personal and business life. The business responsibilities he had included president of Palm Dairies Limited, vice-president of the Consolidated Fruit Company Limited, a director of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), Bank of Montreal and Calgary Power, as well as a member of the board for Royalite Oils, National Trust, and Royal Trust.

    Personally, Dinning was a member of the provincial executive of the Boy Scouts, a vice-president of the Salvation Army, an honorary life member of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Association, a member of the Red Cross executive, and president of both the Lethbridge and Calgary Chambers of Commerce.

    During his life Dinning was also involved in the oil and petroleum industry, working for the Provincial Government of Alberta in such positions as chairman of the Gas Reserves Board, representative on the Alberta gas trunk line gathering system and the Canadian Coal Committee, and member of the National Selective Service Board. He also belonged to the Calgary and Edmonton Rotary and Petroleum Clubs.

    R.J. Dinning died in January 1969, survived by his wife and children.

    Scope and content

    Fond consists of one scrapbook containing newspaper clippings related to the liquor trade, and a number of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings regarding the Alberta Social Credit Party and William Aberhart. Fonds also includes a report, transcripts of religious radio broadcasts given by William Aberhart and E.C. Manning, a typed manuscript entitled Alberta’s Social Credit Pantomime: Two Years of It, pamphlets regarding the Social Credit Party of Alberta, an index of member’s speeches reported in Canadian papers, and a photograph. Also includes material about Solon E. Low.
