    Biographical history

Robert Thompson McGrath was born October 2, 1892 in Lisburn, Ireland. In 1909, he traveled to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He found employment with Foley, Welch and Stewart, who had been contracted to build the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway west of Edmonton, Alberta; Robert was sent to Edmonton.

His parents joined him shortly, and lived in the Calder area of Edmonton. Robert was then assigned to haul freight between Wolf Creek and Tete Jaune Cache, British Columbia; he returned to Edmonton in 1912 and worked for the Canadian Northern Railway Company and then the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company (as a fireman).

In 1915 he joined the 49th Edmonton Battalion and went overseas in the fall of 1915. He returned to Canada in 1919 and continued to work in railroads, ending his career as an engineer when he retired in 1957. He subsequently moved to Kelowna, British Columbia.

He married Milna Esther (Paterson) Stayner in Edmonton in 1919. He later married Dorothy Eileen Ross. R.T. McGrath died March 31, 1983.
