Biographical history
Stefan Shandro (1859-1930) was born in Banyliw Bukowina. Anastasia Ostashek (1868-1921) was born in the same village.
Stefan and Anastasia married, and in 1899 moved with their seven children to Canada. Their family included Andrew (1886-1942), Alexsander (1889-1959), Metro (1889-1936), John (1891-1956), Irene, Nicholas (1899-1950), Mary (1896-1977), Rose, Harry (1904-1982), Lena (1905-1995), Irene (1909-1909), Anne, William (1906-1943), Joseph, and Steven (1912-1984). Stefan's young brothers, Nikon and Sidori, as well as their families also joined the group. They settled to homestead in an area now known as Shandro, Alberta, near Willingdon Alberta. Stefan married Sophia Bondar (nee Chorney) (1892-1974), the widow of Mike Bondar, in 1922.
Tom Shandro was born in 1909 to Andrew (1886-1942) and Frozina (Rose) Hawrelak (1886-1916). Tom married Rose Hawreliak (1913-2013) on February 19, 1933. He belonged to numerous community associations and organizations and received awards for his service to the community. Tom and Rose Shandro served as Hospodar and Hospodenya at Vegreville's Eighth Annual Pysanka Festival.
He died in Edmonton in 1995.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of material documenting the life of the Shandro family and includes a copy of a speech given by Tom Shandro opening Vegreville's Eighth Annual Pysanka Festival; some genealogical notes about the Shandro family; a "Shandro Family in Canada" family tree; an audio recording from a Shandro family reunion; ten copies of photographs featuring the Shandro family in the 1930s and 1940s; and a film, Canada's Ukrainian Heritage, which recreates Ukrainian life about 1900 and was shot at the Historical Village and Pioneer Museum at Shandro near Willingdon, Alberta.

Immediate source of acquisition
Tom A. Shandro loaned the records to be copied by and deposited records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) in 1981 and 1983. In 1981, a member of the Shandro family allowed the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV) to copy the photographs included in the fonds. In 1981, the UCHV transferred the material to the PAA.
