    Biographical history

The Southworth family, consisting of Richard and Sarah (Bolton) Southworth and children William, Richard, and Dorothy, were originally from the town of Leyland, Lancashire, England. They immigrated to Alberta around 1907 and homesteaded in the Barrhead area.

    Custodial history

The photographs were sent by Dorothy Southworth to her friend, Lizzie Baker, in Leyland, Lancashire, England, circa 1908. The photographs were then purchased from a secondhand shop in England by the donor, Jan Krÿff, who subsequently sent them to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2017. The provenance of the photographs between being sent to Baker and purchased by Krÿff is unknown.

    Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs that depict members of the Southworth family on their homestead in the Barrhead area. The photos also depict the family’s wooden house and dirt roads cut through the woods. The photos depicting the rudimentary roads are of particularly high quality.
