    Biographical history

    Donald Forbes Taylor Torrie, a second generation Canadian, and son of Robert James Torrie and Lucretia Monaghan, was born May 14, 1907 in Lamont, Alberta. Alberta Ann Trudgeon, daughter of Francis Frederick Trudgeon and Ada Maud Westover, was born March 10, 1910 on a farm in the Beaver Hills north east of Edmonton, Alberta. Donald and Alberta were married on July 15, 1932 in Lamont.

    Donald Torrie graduated with his Pharmacy degree from the University of Alberta in 1930. He apprenticed with R.E. Harrison in Lamont, and in 1932 he purchased the pharmacy in Berwyn, Alberta, which he operated until 1940. He also played on the hockey team in Berwyn. In 1942 the Torries sold the drugstore to Harry Martin and moved to Edmonton. Their son Donald Francis Robert Torrie was born November 29, 1936 in Berwyn. Donald Forbes Taylor Torrie died December 16, 1944.

    Alberta Torrie was employed by the United States Army Air Force as Chief Switchboard Operator at their base in Edmonton from 1942 to 1946. After Donald's death Alberta married on Neil MacLean Purvis on July 4, 1951 in Edmonton.

    This fonds consists of six 8mm black and white and colour home movies taken by Donald and Alberta Torrie. The subject matter includes family footage, towns and landscapes in northern Alberta, hunting and fishing, threshing, and Edmonton and Calgary views. The films are arranged in original chronological order.
