          The series consists of the records of the Royal Visit Committee, which coordinated the Government of Alberta's activities with respect to the October 1951 visit of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. The records include minutes of committee meetings, correspondence with federal and municipal officials regarding local activities, programs, protocol instructions, space allocations, and press coverage of the visit.

          The fonds consists of three 16 mm cine films taken by Alex McNeil. Two films, dating from the 1930s and 1940s, include footage of Alex McNeil's family including images of the family farm at North Cooking Lake, the Rocky Mountains, the family playing a croquet game, taking outdoor tea, trains, golf, a backyard picnic, an outdoor oversized checker game, tug of war, backyard boxing, drinking beer, swimming, boating, logging, and mowing the lawn, family celebrations, wildlife, and swimming.

          The fonds also includes a film containing additional family footage beginning in 1901, as well as footage of the Royal Family visit in 1939 including images of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, George V, Queen Mary, Edward VIII, and George VI.

          The fonds primarily consists of the records of John Campbell Bowen, but also of his wife, Edith Bowen and daughter, Ruth Bowen, and includes correspondence, sermons, notes, speeches and broadcasts, reports, memoranda of information, pamphlets, programs, certificates, diplomas and scrolls, newspaper clippings, diaries, daily journals while John Campbell Bowen was Lieutenant Governor including a number of materials from the 1939 royal visit, Government House visitors book, visitor calling cards, appointment cards, photographs including John C. Bowen and his family as well as the interior of Government House and a First World War propaganda poster. There is also a transcription disk of John C. Bowen receiving the Legion of Merit for encouraging the cooperation of American and Canadian Forces during the Second World War recorded by CKUA in 1948.

          The photographs depict the 1951 Royal Visit, during which Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Phillip visited all the Canadian provinces. The photographs depict their visit to Edmonton in October, and two are labeled on the reverse with the date and people present. In one of these photos where Princess Elizabeth is making an address, Premier Manning and Lieutenant Governor Bowden are also present.

          One of the photographs is labeled with “Brander Studios,” and it is likely that the photographs were taken by a photographer who worked there.

          The wedding and family portraiture, including formal portraits and candid images, represent the largest portion of the images. The subjects and dates are all identified and span several decades. Commercial photographs for such businesses and Hudson’s Bay Company and many Alberta-based companies including manufacturers, retailers, energy companies, and others are also present and include images intended for advertising, personnel, sites, and interiors. Many events such as parades, banquets, and festivals are also represented in the fonds.

          Scenic photographs of locations around Alberta such as Banff and Jasper National Parks are sampled, as are personal and family photographs.

          The textual records consist of indexes to the photographs and negatives, arranged by portraits, weddings, commercial, and events.

Kings, and a broadcast of the Edmonton Flyers winning the Allen Cup. The original recordings date from 1939 - 1983, but it is unknown when Neil Smith created the copies.

It also includes some general RCMP barracks, group and parade photographs. Of note are the photographs of the 1934 Filn Flon Manitoba miners' strike, and material from the 1939 Royal Visit. Also of note is the 1940s classic "Mountie on Horseback" photograph of Neil McLeod by Harry Rowed, used widely as a promotional photograph for the RCMP and for Canadian tourism for many years. Also of note is signed photograph of Bing Crosby with Neil and May McLeod. Some photographs taken by Harry Rowed. Author of book "The Royal Canadian Mounted Police" is R.C Fetherstonhaugh.

          This collection includes 53 colour transparencies and 5 colour prints depicting the arrival of Prince Charles and the commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7. This ceremony took place from July 7-9, 1977 on the Blackfoot Reserve at Cluny, Alberta. The transparencies depict various dignitaries, politicians, and First Nation Chiefs.

          The images depict then Prince Charles’ arrival at the Calgary, Alberta Airport, other dignitaries and the ceremonies themselves, as well as the crowd and the re-enactments. These slides photos are largely labeled with the names of those present and the dates of the events.

          This collection also includes an invitation to the Treaty 7 Commemoration Ceremony printed by the Government of Alberta (titled “A Century of Trust”) and two copies of a folding invitation to the ceremony printed by the Blackfoot Confederacy. In addition, there is an envelope with a ticket to the ceremony and two different commemoration programmes.
