    Biographical history

    William Dun MacIlvride (also spelled McIlvride) was born in Stayner, Ontario in 1893, the son of William MacIlvride (1857-1925) and Janet Marshall (1863-1948) His family arrived in Innisfail, Alberta in 1905 from Craighurst, Ontario. The family moved east of the Red Deer River in 1908 to homestead near Rowley.

    His father held land for him and his brother, Andrew (1891-1967), when they became of homesteading age. W.D.'s father homesteaded at the Northeast Quarter of Section 30, Township 32, Range 20, West of the 4th Meridian (NE ¼ 30 -32-20-W4). Andy homesteaded at the Southwest Quarter of Section 29, Township 32, Range 20, West of the 4th Meridian (SW ¼ 29-32-20-W4). W.D. homesteaded at the Northeast Quarter of Section 31, Township 32, Range 20, West of the 4th Meridian (NW ¼ 31-32-20-W4).

    W.D. served as Chairman of the school board at Rowley. He also worked for a carnival in the 1920s as an engineer and electrician, travelling throughout British Columbia and Alaska. He also worked in the oil industry. He retired to Edmonton.

    He married Hazel Adams (1908-1986). He had at least one child, Mrs. Charles Wainberg.

    He died in Kelowna, British Columbia in 1976.

    The fonds consists of six photographs pertaining to W.D. McIlvride's life including images featuring a carnival in Alaska, agricultural equipment, and individuals in automobiles dating from the 1920s.

    In 1969, W.D. McIlvride donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta via his daughter, Mrs. C. Wainberg of Edmonton.
